Quality of Accommodations
Accommodation in Germany is generally comfortable and well organized. There does exist a wide range of accommodation options, from budged to midrange to top-end properties. Our hotel partners all represent the midrange category of 3 – 4 stars, directed to the German DEHOGA classification. They offer comfortable and decent-sized rooms with at least medium of style, a private bathroom, TV and direct dial telephone for charge. Our rates include breakfast, which is usually presented in buffet-style, also including hot drinks, juices and muesli.
For comparison, Germany has various hotels at the top end (over EUR 130 for a double room), that offer an international standard of amenities and sometimes a scenic location, special décor or historical ambience. Some may also have pool, saunas, business centers or special supermarket facilities. The budget category promises hostels, simple pensions and hotels where rooms may not always have private bathrooms. Rates rarely exceed EUR 60 for a double room, although in major cities and expensive tourist resorts, the threshold may go up to EUR 80.
If you are driving, note that many city hotels do not have their own parking facilities. In this case you can use public parking areas that normally are charged with a certain daily amount. Some of our partners offer hotel-intern parking facilities (parking areas or garages), that are available for a charge that varies depending on the different hotels. Some of them do even offer free parking facilities.
Hotels
German hotels range from luxurious international chains to comfortable mid range hotels and small family-run establishments. Those that serve breakfast only are called Hotel Garni. It does exist an official classification system, based on a scale of one to five stars, but it is voluntary and a lot don’t participate. Nevertheless, German hotels offer a clean and comfortable location as well as a well run service. Rooms of mid range hotels usually have television with at least one English news channel (CNN or BBC world), direct-dial phones for a charge and hair dryer. Further, wellness areas with sauna and massage facilities are increasingly common.
Pensions, Inns & Private rooms
They are considerably smaller, less formal and cheaper than hotels offering minimal amenities and facilities needs to be shared sometimes. What rooms lack in amenities, they often makes up for in charm and authenticity, often augmented by friendly and helpful hosts who take a personal interest in ensuring that you enjoy your stay. Rates always include breakfast. Throughout the country pensions (Pensionen) are common, while inns (Gasthof, Gaststätte) are more prevalent in rural areas. The latter usually operate their own restaurant serving regional and German food to a loyal local clientele.
