Walking in Germany
There are only a few European countries which offer such a high potential of activities for walkers like Germany does – and all this on a relatively condensed area of space.
The variety of landscapes which is spread over the country from north to south is enormous: rocky as well as plane coastal lines, cultivated fields and fruit orchards, romantic coniferous and mixed forests, picturesque hill and mountain landscapes, tranquilly embedded lakes, wide well-known rivers as well as small and smoothly meandering creeks, deep gorges and narrow valleys ... Lots of them are protected landscapes and either belong to a nature or national park or to one of the biosphere reserves.
A well marked network of walking trails is laid out over the countryside and provides a wide range of walking possibilities of all kinds. In the past years, walking became more and more popular in Germany – with many good effects for walkers. New long, medium and short distance trails have been established with attractive routings on comfortable grounds, offering great panoramic views. Along those routes you will be invited by walker-friendly hotels and inns and their staff members speaking English to a certain degree, but often quite fluently.
Not only for the sake of being active in a natural surrounding, walking is also popular because it is also perfect to combine with your interests in history, culture, cuisine and tradition. All over Germany – and not only in the big cities – you will meet the locals for traditional celebrations, can visit museums, old castles and churches, join a classical or modern concert or simply have a chat while enjoying the wide range of local and regional cuisine.
By the way, navigation is quite easy because of well marked walking trails, a good choice of maps and a rather dense population which enables you to ask somebody in the unlikely event of getting lost. Most Germans do speak at least one foreign language and – if you believe it or not – do generally have a good sense of humour. Experience yourself!
Most of our walking trips lead along the "Top Trails of Germany". These trails offer you the best and most beautiful in german hiking: close to nature and an eventful hiking experience is to be found at every turn.
